Private tutor in Oslo, Norway
Education
Graduated from the University of California (1982), Los Angeles with a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics (minored in mathematical physics). Also, I hold a Master's degree form UCLA in Computer Science (1997). I'm currently studying in a masters program at UIO in theoretical astrophysics. I also hold a masters degree in curriculum development from the California State University, Los Angeles.
Experience
I taught physics, physical science and mathematics at Grant High School and University High School for the Los Angeles Unified School District for 4 years. I was a considered to be a first class teacher and was offered a position as a master teacher which I turned it down in order to accept a position at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California as a scientific software engineer and space flight operation specialist. I worked at JPL for 24 years. While I worked as a teacher, I accepted student of ages ranging from 15 to 50 for private instruction. I love teaching and have a particular interest in pedagogical theory. My approach to tutoring unique in that I focus on the students attitudes towards the suggest, school, and learning, how they study and how they learn. In my experience, helping the student to adjust their attitude towards their studies is as important as their understanding and knowledge of the subject matter itself.

Hobbies
I love working with students of all ages although I have no experience with young children. I become excited by the challenge of helping a student discover their strengths and and abilities. There are perhaps two quotes that inform my approach to tutoring... "Give a man and fish, and he can eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he can eat for the rest of his life". I believe that the best teacher teaches teaching. I strive to show the student how to teach themselves. That is way I usually work with students for a short time. Long term tutoring is usually unnecessary. The second relevant quote is "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure." My students tend to defeat themselves before the begin. This is certainly my experience with my own learning process. I try to encourage my students any way I can, by helping them see their own abilities and to rely on them.
